A
centuries old secret revealed…
" HOW
YOU
CAN AGE A HORSE BY HIS TEETH! "
…even
Queen Victoria was curious to know how this was done!
Hello Horse
Enthusiast,
If you are on this
website because you wonder how to age horses by their teeth, you are at
the right place!
Let me tell you a true story. It’s about an Irishman from
Australia and the Queen of England.
Here’s how it
happened…
Sydney Galvayne left Australia in the early 1880’s to go to Europe. He
had become a renowned horse trainer, and wanted to try his hand at
working with horses back in the Old Country.
To promote his training services Sydney publicly demonstrated his
ability to accurately age horses by looking at their teeth. He proved
to be very good at this!
Two noteworthy results came from his uncanny system of ageing horses
correctly.
The less than reputable horse traders of the day were running for
cover! Sydney was seriously cramping their style by being able to tell
the true age of a horse.
And the Queen of
England became interested. Queen Victoria was an avid
horsewoman. She was intrigued by Galvayne’s accomplishments. As a
result Sydney got invited to a private audience with Queen Victoria to
show her how he was able to age a horse by looking at it’s teeth.

The fame of Sydney’s system grew. In 1885 he wrote a small book about
his technique. It was published in Glasgow, Scotland. Today there are
only a handful of copies still in existence.
Like many timeless things, Galvayne’s simple but effective method got
“lost” for decades during the mid 1900’s. But a few horse owners kept
it alive and passed it on.
Today ageing a horse this way is starting to be used again by more and
more horse people.
Here are just a few
of the benefits you
will discover when you apply this old horseman’s skill:
- Know
how old the horse is that you are interested in buying.
- Know,
by accurately ageing young horses, which teeth may be changing from
baby to adult. This can make a huge difference for you and the horse in
training-related situations.
- Know at a glance if a horse is
under or over 10 years old. This was one of Galvayne’s trademark tricks
and bears his name to this day.
- Know,
by correctly ageing horses, what type of dental care they may need. It
does vary considerably depending on how old they are.
- Know where
old sayings like “long in the tooth” come
from.
Knowing
how to age a horse can be fun! A lot of horse people around you
aren’t able to do it! You may not get an audience with the Queen of
England, but you will get other horse people’s attention with your
ability!
